Fair Lakes Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is pleased to provide frenectomy procedures also known as tongue tie release treatment. The frenum tissue connects the tip of the tongue to the base of the mouth (lingual frenum) and the upper gums to the upper lip (labial frenum). Occasionally, a person can have a thickened, shortened or tighter band of tissue in these places within the mouth that may affect nursing, eating, speech and swallowing.

What is a Tongue Tie?

Tongue-tie is a condition present at birth and can be diagnosed by a pediatrician, lactation consultant or dentist. A tongue tie limits the full range of motion and proper function of the tongue and this can affect the way a baby latches during nursing. It is possible for a child with a tongue-tie to grow, adapt and eventually compensate for the tongue’s restricted movement. However, the lingual frenectomy procedure will restore the full range of motion and proper function of the tongue.

How Can We Help?

If your child has been diagnosed with a tongue tie, we can confirm the diagnosis through an examination and discuss a treatment plan. Fair Lakes Family and Cosmetic Dentistry offers tongue tie release treatment with the LightScalpel™ CO2 Laser. A relatively quick procedure, Dr. Tran will use the laser to gently release the frenum after the area is numbed.

With the CO2 laser, there is minimal discomfort, minimal bleeding, a shorter recovery and no need for sutures. The surgical area will be tender for a few days after the procedure and you will receive post-op care instructions.

Symptoms of Tongue Tie

You may know right away if your baby has a tongue tie as there can be difficulties with proper latch during nursing. Other symptoms of tongue tie include:

  • Difficulty lifting tongue up to the roof of the mouth
  • Limited side to side movement of the tongue
  • Straining to push tongue past the front teeth
  • Appearance of a notch or heart-shaped tongue

If you notice any of these symptoms in your child and you are concerned, please do not hesitate to call us (703) 273-4505.

Benefits of Frenectomy

The lingual frenectomy procedure has many benefits, such as:

  • Improved latch during nursing means better eating and nutrition for your baby
  • With full range of use of the tongue, your child has a better opportunity for speech development and articulation
  • The tongue is free to rest against the roof of the mouth which is the proper location for optimal dentition
  • Reduced risk of sleep disordered breathing or sleep apnea

Post Op Exercises

After a lingual frenectomy, you will receive instructions that show gentle massaging and stretching exercises that should be done several times a day. These stretches are the key to a successful tongue tie release treatment. They also promote proper healing in the area and prevent any scar tissue from developing.

If your child has been diagnosed with a tongue tie and you want to learn more about the lingual frenectomy procedure, call us today (703) 273-4505.
